How does MLaaS work?

All throughout recent decades, there has been the rapid development of products into full-fledged cloud services and this has led to the development of infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, and software as a service. The cloud space market can now be considered as a battlefield of these services. The new entrant in the competition is now machine learning as a service where data storage becoming cloud-based and extrapolation of new trends in the data to create good insights has now entered the market. The presence of MLaaS has made it possible to reduce the cost of finding predictive analytics solutions.

The meaning of MLaaS

When machine learning tools can be incorporated into an array of services along with cloud computing, it is known as Machine Learning as a Service. In a company, a machine learning team would house several challenges such as cognate costs, risk, and time in establishing a machine learning department. Most clients can benefit with MLaaS without considering these challenges in the process. Machine learning service providers mitigate the infrastructural concerns of the company such as model training, data pre-processing, model evaluation, and final predictions.

The functioning details of MLaaS

Generic machine learning tools that can be incorporated by most organisations is offered by MLaaS so that most working needs of the organisation are fulfilled. The services included under this umbrella are- facial recognition, application programming interfaces, predictive analytics, natural language processing, and deep learning. Patterns within the data are separated and found using the algorithms of machine learning. The predictions are based on large volumes of the present and historical data which have been manipulated using mathematical models which have been derived from the algorithms.

Machine learning service providers

The actual computation is not handled by the companies availing MLaaS and this computation is taken care of by the data centre of the service provider. MLaaS is incorporated in the company as a full stack AI platform which is provided by machine learning solution providers and includes a host of consolidated systems such as mobile applications, industrial automation and control, enterprise information, and advanced sensors such as LiDar. The probabilistic reasoning and pattern recognition are also a part of MLaaS. The company’s needs can be met using these services and it also streamlines the workflow. The algorithms that form the basis of MLaaS include convolutional neural networks, Bayesian networks, probabilistic graphical models, deep neural networks, and restricted Boltzmann networks.

How SMBs can benefit from MLaaS

Small and medium businesses can select ML tools and services which are ideal for them and make sense for them. This is advantageous as the services can be customized to meet the needs of the business. MLaaS reduces the burden of creating an ML department from scratch for most companies and this is essential if the business is small and needs to cut costs and lower infrastructure costs. This is mainly because the storage facilities to store large volumes of data is not present in most SMBs. The internal resources required to manage these is also very large. The MLaaS platform helps in relieving those problems.
